Strategy Application that Engages Disquisitional Thinking:

*Direct Listening Thinking Activity-
1. Activate some prior knowledge by brainstorming a list of animals and and so categorizing them by mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds. Perhaps exercise this on the Smart Lath/White Board/Anchor Chart where it can remain up as a reference during the reading of the volume and the writing activity.

two. Read the nonfiction book, What If I Had Animal Teeth!?, to the students, stopping after each description of the animal's teeth to ask students to share a prediction about what a student'southward teeth might await like if similar to the animals.

three. Writing Activity using nonfiction and fiction as Mentor Texts:
*Teacher models her own writing: the story of losing her first tooth referring dorsum to Bear's Loose Tooth as a model. Invite students to write their own story. Provide a format/template to help go them started.
*Choose a different animal to write a "Tooth Fact" about and illustrate using the nonfiction model of a "Fact Bubble".

Depending on how it is used, this book is advisable for kindergarten through sixth grade. Personally, I have used it as a read-aloud to my 4th graders, and they got so into it! I have used it to compare and contrast their teeth to an animal's teeth or to compare two animals teeth that were in the book. I take had students write a paragraph about which animal teeth they would want and draw how they would employ them. Teachers could also use it to point out text elements such as pictures, captions, and bullet points.

This is a "WOW" book to me because of how fun and engaging this book is, peculiarly to be so full of factual data. This book contains photographs of each beast forth with facts virtually their teeth. As well as, an illustration of a child with that creature's teeth and provides a fun tidbit about what information technology would be like if the reader had them. For example, "If you had hippopotamus front end teeth, you'd never need to brush. Your upper teeth would grind against your lower ones, keeping them clean and white." Another reason this is a "WOW" book is because of the reaction my students have had over the years when we accept read it. They are engaged and really thinking most these animals and have even asked to seek out more information about them!

It'due south the first book I've read in the series, and I really liked the way the author and illustrator collaborated to inform children about the myriad types of teeth in the natural world.

Along with the descriptive narrative and 'Fact' blurbs, they used photographs to describe the featured animals, such as beavers and naked mole rats, and created humorous full-page illustrations to help readers relate to how the teeth are used and what it would be like to have them in our ain mouths.

I as well appreciated that the importance of our own personal dental care is emphasized at the end of the volume, thus leading to a perfect transition after a parent-child storytime to brushing and flossing before going to bed.

Finally, I just had to mention the illustrative manner Mr. McWilliams uses. It's a cartoonish and overly exaggerated fashion that still seems quite realistic in many ways, and reminds me strongly of C.F. Payne's work.

Illustrations throughout the whole thing can lead to them forgetting this fact. They volition demand to do some research on how and what that fauna would demand to survive there. Students volition need to use higher cerebral thinking to create questions they will need to reply, research their animal and location, and so draw conclusions on if and how their beast would survive in that location.
